Case study · Automotive

From paper on the line to a record in the MES.

VHIT S.p.A. replaced printed assembly work instructions with REWO inside the MES its operators already use. Approved updates now reach every shift the moment they are published — and every review is recorded against the operator who made it.

Deployment

Integrated — MES via API

VHIT S.p.A. is an Italian automotive technology company with more than 60 years of industry experience. Part of the Weifu High-Technology Group since 2022, VHIT develops and manufactures mechanical and electric pumps, thermal management systems and hydraulic solutions for passenger cars, commercial vehicles and off-road applications.

The challenge

Instructions that lived on paper, and on trust.

Production engineers printed each document, placed it at the workstation, and told shift leaders when it changed. Four risks came with that.

Distribution depended on people

Updates travelled by email and shift leader. Information could reach one shift and never reach the operators working later ones.

Outdated copies stayed on the line

Paper could be misplaced, removed, or left in place long after a newer digital version had been approved.

No proof of who had read what

There was no reliable way to confirm which operators had reviewed a new or revised instruction — so compliance was difficult to verify.

Documents scattered across systems

Instructions, approval status and related records sat in different folders and systems. Finding the right one meant looking in several places.

The solution

A document layer inside the system they already use.

REWO was deployed as the digital document layer within VHIT's existing MES environment — so operators reach the latest approved instruction without leaving the screen in front of them.

Connected to the MES by API

Operators open the relevant documents from inside the manufacturing system, with no switching between platforms.

Badge-based identification

When an operator scans their badge, the system shows the instructions relevant to their assigned line — and records who reviewed each document, and when.

One board per line, at the point of use

All line-related documents are organised in a single digital board, reachable from production terminals or tablets at the workstation.

Written and video, side by side

VHIT keeps existing written documentation for standard information and adds video where text alone is hard to follow — changeovers, for example.

The results

Faster to the operator, and provable afterwards.

Immediate

Approved updates reach operators on publication

Paperless

No printing or physical replacement in assembly

Per operator

Named record of who reviewed each document

One version

The latest approved instruction is the only one on the line

Updates land in minutes, not hours

Previously an engineer had to print, replace and rely on a shift leader to pass the change on — which could take hours or miss later shifts entirely.

Assembly went paperless

VHIT no longer prints, replaces or maintains work instructions across its current assembly-line deployment.

Traceability an auditor can follow

VHIT can show which operator reviewed each instruction and when — evidence that a process change was actually communicated.

Version-control risk removed

Centralised digital access means operators work from the latest approved instruction, not an outdated paper copy.

Customer perspective

“With REWO integrated into our MES, operators can access the latest instructions immediately, while we can see exactly who reviewed each document and when.”

Luca Stacco, Automotive Production Engineer, VHIT S.p.A. — VHIT S.p.A.

Bottom line

Distribution became a workflow, not an errand.

By embedding REWO directly into its MES, VHIT turned work-instruction distribution from a manual, paper-based process into an immediate and traceable digital one. Operators reach the latest approved documents through the systems they already use, and VHIT can verify who reviewed each update and when. With plans to extend REWO beyond assembly into machining, the same approach scales across production.
